What is Banner Advertising?
Banner advertising is an advertisement displayed on a web page, it’s the best way to promote products or services online. Presented in a graphic form (image or animation) attractive, convincing and personalized, the banner has to invite the user to click on the link redirecting towards a precise page of your website. The banner advertising offers to the announcers of many possibilities to invite to the click, generate the traffic, increase sales and develop the image and the notoriety.

A banner advert is based on the visual, there are two kinds of banners (depending on the technology used to make them):
- The static banner ad can be a simple image or a visual that is acting just like an ad but in the digital ecosystem you can click on it and get to the website or landing page of the advertisement.
- An animated banner ad is a type of digital advertisement that is delivered by an ad server. The purpose is the same as the one for the static banner ad: to get noticed on the website and make the user click on it.

How does banner advertising work?
A banner ad is an image that redirects visitors to your website if they click on it. Other websites publish your banners alongside their content. A banner ad is a type of hyperlink that uses a graphic instead of text. In its most basic form, a person viewing a website sees a graphic ad (which may contain images and/or text), above, below, or next to the main content.
When the same person clicks on the banner ad, as would be the case with a hyperlink, a redirection occurs to the advertiser’s website. More complex banners can have sound, Flash or .gif animations or videos to attract more attention.

Advertising banners can be:
- Small and very wide, placed at the top or bottom of the page. These are classic banners.
- Larger than the traditional version. These types of banners are termed “leaderboard” (mega-banner).
- Very large and thin, placed all along the page. They are called “skyscrapers” (skyscrapers).
How to spread my banner ads?
Banner ads appear on other websites. This consists of three main ways to publish them:
- Contact websites directly.
- Join a network of advertising banners. It works as a “broker” between advertisers and websites wishing to serve ads.
- Join an ad banner exchange program. You agree to post ads on your website and in exchange, your ads will be distributed elsewhere.

What is the method of payment for advertising banners?
Advertising banners generally operate on a cost-per-click (CPC) basis. This means that you have to pay a small fee to the website displaying your ad for each person clicking on it. You can also pay every time your banner ad appears, whether someone clicks on it or not. This is called “cost per impression” (CPI). As part of a banner exchange program, you have nothing to pay. Instead, you must distribute the free banners of other participants to your website.
How do you know if it’s a success?
To see the performance of your advertising banners, you can use:
- The number of broadcasts of your banner.
- The percentage of people who saw and clicked on it.
- The percentage of visitors who became buyers after viewing.
By looking at these data and comparing them to the amount you spent on these banners and the value to your business, you can calculate the return on investment.
